Dear Cross Country Athletes and Parents,

Winning runners do not emerge overnight. Some of you have talent, but need to spend time nurturing your talent so that you are running the best you possibly can at the end of the season. Running over the summer is essential to the achievement of your running goals.

Those of you who are just begining also need to prepare, as I will assume that you have a solid foundation of running when we begin practice.

It is very important that you train this summer. Even if you are on vacation, it is very easy to get in your training runs, as all you need is running clothes and shoes.

This year, to keep me informed, you will be writing on this blog with a weekly update on how much you have been running. Keep your records but also write on the blog in the following format:

This week I ran 25 miles, I ran the Howl a the Moon race and got a 27:51 for the 5k.

This way we will have a better idea of where you will begin in your training in August.

In addition, try to participate in at least once race this summer. There are many 5k's (3.2 Miles) and longer races with in driving distance of Champaign-Urbana. For a list of local races check the Second wind running club website .

As a team we will be going to one of the Za's 3 Fridays before races. 9/11 , 10/10 , 10/17. Money for these trips needs to be paid in advance to Za's Cafe by the Robeson meet (8/ 29/2009).

I am looking forward to training with you for the upcoming Cross Country season. I hope you are as excited as I am for this season to begin.

Runners are encouraged to bring water bottles and sport watches to practice on a daily baises. Please label your water bottle with your last name in large print. A five gallon water cooler will be avaliable at all practices. By re-using water bottles we will keep litter to a minumum.

Practices will last approximately 90 minutes, located at south side of Centennial Park near the sled hill. Therefor, it is CRUCIAL for all runners to be on time. Practices will be from 6:15am - 7:30am until school starts. Once school starts practices will be from 4:45pm to 6:15pm.

During practices we will have announcements, strech, do our work out, and cool down. Any street running will be done by varsity runners who will have a college student running with them for safety.

Also,
Runners in the past have expressed a desire for group summer running. I've set a time this summer from 5:30pm - 6:30pm on the Mahomet trails. This way runners can get to know each other before the season starts. I handed out a map to runners at the end of the school year of this park. This is not a supervised event, so please do not simply drop off your children.
